We all ways had animals and i felt and liked them better then people even at a younger age. I had friends and what not, but i rather spend time with the critters, so it just seemed to be a natural thing for me.

I've been aware of my zoo attraction for years and didn't know it was weird until I was much older. I would get very excited watching nature shows, hoping to see mating. In fact one of my first internet searches years ago was 'animals mating'... I also once had the username 'mating_acaras' on Neopets, lol ('acaras' are a kind of furry alien pet on there).
So yes I would say for me it's an orientation, not a fetish, although it can play into fetishes for me.

I Think it's funny as my first time on the internet back in the day; I searched "dog sex" out of curiosity and it popped up a bunch of zoo porn, actually the first I had ever saw it.. Didn't even know they made zoo porn up until that point.. But I can also relate to what you said about the nature shows, I Remember watching those as well and was very interested in the mating scenes, loved seeing the various different genitalia of the animals, but id have to say the one I watched that arouse my interest the most was a documentary of wolf's.. About 10 minutes in it was describing wolves mating habits, and it showed wolves mating close up..
 it aired twice in one day a long time ago, and I watched it, and when it came on again I recorded it to a VHS tape.. I watched that video almost everyday for what seemed forever.. I was about 10 or so at that point, I still have that VHS tape somewhere lol

When I first came on the internet, a ways back in 98, I searched only for "loss of a dog". It brought me to a chat room called "Pet Loss" where I met a woman calling herself "Collar".
She listened to me talk about Tippy for a while, and said, "You don't belong here. You need to go to this website." and she directed me to the old WhiteShadow forum. Until then, I really thought I was a strange one out of a million for fucking my dog AND loving her besides. I was new to the 'net, and never thought there were places where folks like me gathered to talk. The first person I met there was Collar, a lesbian zoo, who laughed in an e-mail to "silverwolf" and said "I know who you are!" . 
Before then though, I was never ashamed of who or what I was, just private with it because it was no-one elses business. I've remained such, though I learned there were many other reasons to keep it private. I met some good people there, including my only 3 RL contacts to this day: Hermes & Pongo, who are gone now, and Big Al, who I wish would join here.

I guess your right, they do go hand in hand, but the general definition of a fetish is a strong sexual devotion to something.. I'd claim my orientation as a cynophilist, (I guess it would be a fetish as well, but I do not claim it to be as it's also a strong emotional attachment) but at the same time I do have a sexual attraction to equines which Ive fantasized about many times so I guess you could classify that as a fetish..
