Well, fights among stallions when one tries to mate is absolutely normal, if there's another similarly ranked stallion present.
Which is why one of the HUGE rules around horses is NEVER come up behind a stallion in the presence of a mare. Unless you rather like the idea of deep impressions of his back hoofs in your forehead. Better stand well clear of his front feet as well. Stallions "foreplaying" a mare will automatically assume ANY distraction nearby is an attack by another stallion and will react accordingly.
