Remembering A Friend
#1
I remember the first time I saw you,
You sat forlorn and terrified in the kennel.
It took several tries to coax you out,
You would shrink back each time another dog barked.

They put the leash on you and handed it to me,
You hesitantly, haltingly, joined me on a walk.
The elderly dog I brought with me touched noses with you.
You shyly wagged your tail.
The beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Afraid of everything, you could not finish the walk.
I carried you back to the shelter.
Still, I saw the potential in you;
I arrived with one dog, left with two.

It was only a matter of weeks,
Before you came out of your shell.
The sad, frightened, mistreated dog,
Became the sweet, lively boy
I quickly came to love.

Trotting quietly beside me through the woods,
You sailed gracefully over a downed tree.
Then prancing, grinning and wagging,
You waited for me to catch up.

The unusual woman at the Town Green
Looked into your eyes and seemed shocked.
She said you had witnessed a murder,
Of someone you cared about.

I knew where you came from and checked online,
I found a news article that matched
The time, the place, description of the dog.
That poor girl! Now I know why you were scared.

We had two good years together,
It should have been many more.
But one night you refused your dinner,
Next day the Vet found a mass in your belly.

They gave you four to six weeks,
You gave me another eight months.
But when we had to say goodbye to your dear friend,
You gave up the fight and joined her after ten days.

It's been over five years since you left me,
New dogs snore at my feet as I write this.
But the fearful dog with the golden eyes,
Later the happy, good looking boy, lives on in my heart.
